Well

I finally figured this out, so hopefully I'll use it in the future.

Learning is fun!

I'm very excited.

My computer is now a dual-boot system with Ubuntu 7.1 linux and mac OSX 10.4.11 :)

I'm getting wine (to run windows apps without windows) and Fear: Combat at the moment so I anticipate some hours of gaming are on the horizon, (along with intense forum browsing and newbie guide reading).

This is my first experience with Linux and it has consumed me with interest. Learning can be so much fun. It's just a very exciting process and I recommend experimenting sometime.

*edit* Fear failed to make it past the serial input key, for the loss, but there are plenty of other games to waste time on.

I highly recommend UrbanTerror as a totally FREE CounterStrike-like fps with 37 maps (not to mention user mods / maps).

supported on windows/mac/ & linux (though you must run a script to dl and install it)

If you get it, let me know and we'll play sometime.

God's gift to mankind.

We all know that the fashion industry has its whims and cycles. But the comments in this article make me realize why we threw out pantyhose in the first place - I mean, besides the fact that they're itchy, hot, and bad for your health (think about it).

"The mother-in-law might find solace in the fact that her views are supported by the president of the United States. One of his first actions upon taking office was to reinstate the White House dress code requiring, among other things, that women wear stockings in the West Wing. Exhibit A, Condoleezza Rice, the fashionable secretary of state."

Again, so many things wrong with this that I hardly know where to begin. First, I will merely point out that Condoleezza Rice was called an "exhibit" and leave the rest to you. Then, I'd like to put Bush in hose and see how he likes it. I simply do not understand how requiring an article of clothing that mimics nudity can possibly be about discouraging indecent exposure. So what's the motivation for this? Well, we find out one man's view later in the article:

"About 70% of the impassioned commenters on Stockingshq.com are male, according to site founder David Bradwell. Their push for hose is about making "ladies" look sexy.

"It's about leaving something to the imagination," he said. "A gift which is wrapped and can then be unwrapped is better."

He also admits he's never tried to wear them."

A gift which is wrapped and then can be unwrapped - because a woman's sexuality doesn't belong to her, it belongs to all the males who see her on a daily basis.

Disgusting.

In case you were wondering, brown people aren't brown.

And calling them brown is a
hate crime!

I don't know what's worst: the fact that the principal of an elementary school told a student that it was okay to be racist, the fact that a boy was suspended for calling brown people brown, or the fact that the statement was apparently elicited by a parent doing questioning.

The most disturbing thing about this story is the way it trivializes and marginalizes actual hate crimes. Think about it: if you were a child in this elementary school and heard about this incident, would you consider a hate crime to be a serious thing?

As a woman of color and graduate of one of the worst school districts in my state, I would like to point out that this is one of the most shocking displays of dumbassery I have ever seen from a school administration - and that's saying something.

(Hi, LHC!! :D)

Edited to add: I'd like to encourage anyone with thoughts on any of these posts to leave us a comment. I'd like to see some discussion here!
A delightful take on a popular rap song and dance.

Odd Traffic

Apparently we've had a number of unique visits from The Long Hair Community. lol I can't find the thread that has the referral to us, (anybody link in their forum or something?) but hey, more traffic isn't a bad thing =]
